The INSLM independently reviews the operation, effectiveness and implications of national security and counter-terrorism laws; and considers whether the laws contain appropriate protections for individual rights, remain proportionate to terrorism or national security threats, and remain necessary.

Current Reviews

On 19 July 2024 the INSLM announced the commencement of a review of the operation, effectiveness and implications of the amendments made by Schedules 1, 2 and 3 of the Surveillance Legislation Amendment (Identify and Disrupt) Act 2021 (SLAID Act). The SLAID Act introduced new warrants to enable the AFP and ACIC to identify offenders through intelligence gathering, to takeover online accounts to gather evidence, and to disrupt serious crime online.
